An iron door is a variant of the door made of iron that can only be opened using redstone. Iron doors are more secure than wooden and copper doors because they cannot be opened by hand and cannot be broken by zombies. They are also more resistant to explosions, and immune to fire and lava.
Obtaining[edit | edit source]
Iron doors are most commonly found in strongholds, where they generate often. They are also craftable by the player using 6 iron ingots.
Breaking[edit | edit source]
An iron door can be mined with anything, but pickaxes are the fastest. Pistons can also break doors by pushing the piston head or any block into the door.
Iron doors require a solid block beneath them for support. If that block is removed, the door breaks and drops itself.

- correct tool, drops nothing or something other than the block itself
- correct tool, drops the block itself
- italicized can be instant mined
- ↑ These durations ignore other influential factors (e.g. Mining Fatigue), and are measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking § Speed.
Natural generation[edit | edit source]
Iron doors generate as part of:
- Prison rooms in woodland mansions
- Strongholds with a stone button to open[Java Edition only]

Usage[edit | edit source]
Iron doors can only be opened with redstone power; players or wind charge blasts cannot toggle iron doors.
Barrier[edit | edit source]
Iron doors can only be opened and closed by a redstone signal. When an iron door opens or closes, it immediately changes its orientation without affecting anything in the space between.
Redstone component[edit | edit source]
An iron door is a redstone mechanism and can be activated by weakly powering any cardinally adjacent block.
When activated, the iron door immediately opens. When deactivated, it immediately closes.
Air pockets[edit | edit source]
Iron doors can be used as air pockets underwater in Java Edition because they can't be waterlogged. They can also be used as air pockets in lava in both Java and Bedrock Editions since they don't burn in lava.
