A dried ghast is a block that is an immobile, shrivelled, harmless ghast. It can be crafted or found near nether fossils. Placing it in water will cause it to get hydrated over time and eventually become a friendly ghastling.

It was revealed at Minecraft LIVE – March 2025, and is planned to be added to the game with the Summer Drop 2025 in June 2025.[1]

Obtaining[edit | edit source]

Breaking[edit | edit source]

A dried ghast can be instantly mined with any tool or by hand, and it always drops itself when mined. If mined while waterlogged, it reverts to its "dry" state regardless of which state it has reached while waterlogged.

A dried ghast is removed and drops as an item if water flows into its space.

Natural generation[edit | edit source]

Dried ghasts naturally generate in soul sand valleys as part of nether fossils but can only be found 1/3 of the time.

Usage[edit | edit source]

When a dried ghast is submerged in water, it initiates a rehydration process: green particles appear, and the ghast gradually develops a smiling expression and becomes brighter in color. These visual changes appear in stages, becoming noticeable after 5 minutes (partially hydrated), more pronounced after 10 minutes (mostly hydrated), and visually complete (hydrated) after 15 minutes. After 20 minutes, it transforms into a ghastling, which matures over time into a happy ghast.

If the water is removed during the process, the ghast slowly reverts back to the original, dried state at the same rate as it hydrates. Breaking a dried ghast instantly reverts it to the dried state.
