    • Kill/damage players who are in Survival mode.
    • Break bedrock.
    • Take damage (via falling out of the world).
  • Mobs now spawn. Previously, they would only spawn in Survival mode.

Controls

  • Holding the left mouse button with a weapon now only swings once.
  • Holding the right mouse button to place blocks is slightly slower than before.

Removals[edit | edit source]

World generation[edit | edit source]

    • This also means that dandelions generate more often than intended.
  • Snow
    • No longer generates naturally due to similar circumstances.

Structures

Other

  • The Far Lands have been removed from the game's code, as low noise and high noise generators (responsible for them) don't overflow anymore.
  • 3 noise generators have been removed from the game's code. These are: scale noise, sand noise, and gravel noise.

General[edit | edit source]

Fixes[edit | edit source]

9 bugs fixed

  • The ⇧ Shift + click crash bug from 1.8 Prerelease 2 is fixed.
  • Fixed redstone circuits not working after /time set x glitch is now fixed in multiplayer.

  • Fixed several crash bugs relating to pistons.
  • Increased the z-buffer from 8-bit to 24-bit, fixing graphical issues with AMD graphics cards.

Distance effects[edit | edit source]

  • The world rendering no longer loses precision at high coordinates.
  • Vertically traveling redstone dust no longer "snaps" to the side planes of blocks at high coordinates.
  • Ladders, rails, and the side textures of vertically flowing water and lava no longer becomes stretched at high coordinates.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • This was the first version to use the pre-1.7 terrain generator.

    • However, villagers were not added yet.
    • Strongholds also were added in this version as well, but did not have an end portal.

Trailer[edit | edit source]

The official trailer for Beta 1.8, made by Hat Films. The footage shown is from an earlier, non-public preview build given to Hat Films for advertising purposes, and thus has a few differences from public versions. Made before Java Edition's final release (and way before 1.8 existed), the trailer omits "Beta" from the version title.
