Usage

This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.

Interface for the grindstone

When used, a GUI is displayed with two input slots and one output slot.

Putting two damaged items of the same type as inputs will combine their durabilities to form a new item in the output slot, with an added 5% durability as a bonus. Any non-curse enchantments on the top item will be removed upon performing the action, returning an amount of experience for each. This can range from just a few points for low-level enchantments such as Efficiency I or Protection I, to many levels for higher ones. The bottom input item will be sacrificed in this operation.

A single enchanted item can also be placed in either input slot, which just removes its non-curse enchantments without repairing it or sacrificing another item.

If the action is not applicable, i.e. the two inputs are different items, the arrow will have a red cross, like that of the anvil.
