A sub dungeon is a type of location in Minecraft Dungeons that is accessed through a door within a larger location. They are found within missions, secret missions, sub-missions, and Camp. Certain sub dungeons are required, and always spawn 100% of the time. Other sub dungeons are optional, and have varying spawn chances.

Appearance and description

A sub dungeon is a smaller location within a larger location, and is always accessed through a door. Tower floor types are an example of a required sub dungeon, while endersent dungeons, rune rooms, and ancient dungeons are examples of an optional sub dungeon. Required and optional sub dungeons can both contain chests, raid captains, and other challenges. Optional sub dungeons specifically can also contain eyes of ender, ancient mobs, higher level reward chests such as fancy or obsidian chests, and scrolls to unlock secret missions.

Spawning

While required sub dungeons always spawn 100% of the time, most optional sub dungeons have varying spawn chances. Players must repeatedly reset a location until they get a layout with a desired optional sub dungeon. The number of secrets in a mission, shown on the bottom left corner of the mission map accessed by pressing the “M” key, can be useful for determining if a given mission layout contains an optional sub dungeon.
