A mission or dungeon[1] is a type of location in Minecraft Dungeons that is entered using the mission select map in Camp. Missions act as traversable levels that feature dangerous mobs and valuable rewards. Most of them are required to progress the story, and many are DLC-exclusive. Unlike secret missions, missions play a short cinematic upon entering that features a voiceover. There are twenty-six missions in the game, consisting of eleven on the mainland, ten in the island realms, and five in other dimensions.
Appearance and description
Missions can be travelled to from the mission select map once Camp becomes accessible upon completion of Squid Coast. Missions do not appear on the map until they are unlocked through progression. Missions can contain required sub dungeons, optional sub dungeons, and scrolls that unlock secret missions. There are five main collectables that can be found in a mission: consumables, emeralds, armor, artifacts, and weapons. Due to the nature of how missions are unlocked, it is entirely possible to skip completing Pumpkin Pastures and Soggy Swamp while still completing the main story.

Generation
Missions in Minecraft Dungeons are defined through JSON files containing level data. This data includes a list of major level segments, called stretches. Each stretch has its own tiles, which are level segments that are connected together to create random layouts each time a level is played. Stretches can also contain lists of tiles chosen randomly by weights. These lists can also be defined outside stretches as "tile groups."
Tiles are connected through entrances which appear at each end of the tile. Some tiles also contain more than two doors, allowing for side paths. Side paths are determined by each stretch, and themselves are lists of tiles that go on for a defined length. Side paths also have a randomly determined dead end, which is a tile with only one door that cleanly ends a side path, as well as randomly determined tiles. Tile groups are typically used for side paths. Additionally, side paths are not always defined or guaranteed to generate, and can be replaced entirely with a dead end.
Tile data is defined externally in object groups, which are referenced by levels. Object groups are lists of "objects," which are sets of block data which may also include boundaries and lists of positions used as spawn points, doors, or entrances. Most objects are tiles, but some are also placed within tiles at spawn points, such as trees or houses.
Each stretch also has its own set of mobs defined per-level. Stretches additionally define a "density" for mobs, determining how densely they are spawned in the stretch.
Besides stretches, level data may also define the rotation each tile is spawned at, and may define doors that teleport the player to a required sub dungeon or optional sub dungeon. Sub dungeons are essentially levels within levels, defining their own stretches and ambience. They are exclusively accessed through doors.
Each level contains props that are placed in level tiles through code. The level data does not determine the placement of props in any way, with the exception of doors to sub dungeons, which are defined in the level's tile data.
