— Guide to Minecraft Dungeons: A Handbook for Heroes |
A royal guard is a heavily-armored illager that can be found within the various missions of Minecraft Dungeons. A variant of the royal guard, the tower guard, exists within certain floors of the Tower.

Lore[edit | edit source]
Royal guards are elite illager troops above vindicators and pillagers in the strict hierarchy of illager society, being responsible for personally defending the Arch-Illager. As such, they are strategically employed in locations such as Highblock Keep, Obsidian Pinnacle, Lone Fortress, Gale Sanctum, and Lost Settlement, but were also employed throughout Creepy Crypt, Lower Temple, Underhalls, Colossal Rampart, Gauntlet of Gales, and Broken Citadel. They focus on forcing their enemies to flee from them in fear.[1]
Royal guards wield heavy maces and wear a modified version of dark armor that has an intricate golden border as well as a gem that is blue rather than red. This armor was designed in the depths of the Fiery Forge[2] with intimidation in mind, needing to be capable of overwhelming enemies with both damage and numbers.[1]
The golden pattern on royal guard shields is depicted in the shape of a cross, which also happens to be depicted on illager-related banners, blocks, and the walls of the Woodland Mansion and Highblock Keep.[1]
In a Twitter video, Greta was saved by Valorie from some enchanted royal guards in Highblock Halls.[3]
In another Twitter video, the tower avatar encounters royal guards[4] alongside tower guards, within the Tower.[5]
Behavior[edit | edit source]
A royal guard can be damaged only after its shield is destroyed. Royal guards are slower than most mobs, yet extremely strong, capable of dealing heavy damage to the hero. Despite this, they can be, however, be stunned by normal attacks.
Royal guards chase and attack the hero who attracted them first and ignore other heroes.[verify]
Royal guards have two behaviors:
- Walk

Royal guards charge at any hero that comes within their range of attack.
- Basic attack

Royal guards swing their mace at the hero, dealing heavy melee damage. However, unlike vindicators, they cannot move while attacking.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Sometimes, a skeleton with royal guard equipment can generate within the creepy crypt, the panda plateau, and the overgrown temple. When the hero interacts with it, the skeleton disappears and waves of skeletons are summoned around it. After the waves are defeated, the hero gets a chest as a reward, yet they cannot take the shield and dark armor.
- Armor and shields of the royal guard are slightly scaled up by 1.1x or 1.2x in game and loading screens. However in the Highblock Halls cutscenes, royal guard uses original size.
- Worn down statues of the royal guards can be found within the stronghold, as well as skeletons holding their equipment as mentioned above. There's also an ancient variant of the mob as well.
