A zombie horse is an unused variant of the regular horse. Zombie horses appear to be the horse equivalent of zombies. Like zombies, zombie horses are green-skinned and their eyes are completely black.
Spawning[edit | edit source]
Zombie horses can't spawn naturally.
Zombie horses may be created by the /summon
command or with their spawn egg. When using a spawn egg, 20% spawn as baby zombie horses.
Drops[edit | edit source]
On death[edit | edit source]
Item | Roll Chance | Quantity (Roll Chance) | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Default | Looting I | Looting II | Looting III | |||
![]() | Rotten Flesh | 100% | 0–2 | 0–3 | 0–4 | 0–5 |
- 1–3XP when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
If saddled, they drop their saddle.
Baby zombie horses yield neither items nor experience.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Tamed and saddled zombie horses can be used as one of the fastest means of transportation in the game. They can also be used to climb hills and jump fences.
In Bedrock Edition, they cannot be ridden.
Equipment[edit | edit source]

Zombie horses have a lone equipment slot.
Saddle slot: For equipping a saddle.
In Bedrock Edition, they have no slot.
Riding[edit | edit source]
Once a horse is tamed and saddled, the player can control it with directional controls, jump, and the mouse. The player dismounts using the dismount control. Like riding other entities, it is possible for a player to use a nether portal or end portal while on a horse.
A ridden horse automatically runs up any one-block-high slope. The horse and rider can safely fit through a space as low as 2.75 blocks high. Lower clearance risks suffocating the rider if the rider's head enters a non-transparent block. The horse itself can enter gaps as low as 1.625 blocks high, but may itself take suffocation damage when clearance is less than 1.75 blocks. Horses cannot fit through a 1-block-wide gap.
Ridden saddled zombie horses have the ability of "jumping charging". When the player rides them, the experience bar on HUD is replaced by jumping charging bar. A ridden saddled zombie horses can be made to jump and holding the control charges for a higher leap. Zombie horses are not affected by jump boost beacons or potions.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
The zombie horse is an undead mob that is completely passive. Zombie horses behave like normal horses, roaming idly and occasionally stopping to rear, swish their tails, or lower their heads as though eating the grass. Unlike sheep and like other horses, the eating animation does not cause any grass to be consumed. Zombie horses can breathe in water.
Unlike other passive mobs, zombie horses slowly regenerate health. In Bedrock Edition zombie horses will be killed by the Conduit like any regular hostile mob, despite being passive.
Zombie horses can safely fall 6 blocks before they begin to accumulate fall damage, unlike most mobs, which can only safely fall 3 blocks. Zombie horses also take half of the normal fall damage (rounded up) that most other mobs take (0.5HP damage per block over the safe distance instead of 1 × 0.25HP). If an entity is riding a zombie horse, they receive the same fall damage as the zombie horse.
Zombie horses cannot be bred, however, in Java Edition, tamed zombie horses can be fed while being ridden by another mob, the valid food items are the same as for the normal horse: sugar, wheat, normal/gold/enchanted apples, golden carrots, and hay bales.
If a player pulling a zombie horse with a lead enters a boat, the zombie horse follows by swimming the same speed as the boat. A player riding a zombie horse is dragged along if the zombie horse is being pulled by a lead, and can even be lifted up in the air in the same way.
Being an undead mob, they are:
- damaged by the status effect Instant Health and healed by the status effect Instant Damage.
- unaffected by the status effects Regeneration and Poison.
- ignored by the wither.
- affected by the Smite enchantment.
- a threat to armadillos, causing them to hide in their shell.
Taming[edit | edit source]
Zombie horses cannot be tamed normally. However, in Java Edition, with the use of commands, a zombie horse can be tamed in the same way as a regular horse, granting the Best Friends Forever advancement: /ride @s mount @e[type=minecraft:zombie_horse,limit=1]
. A tamed zombie horse can also be summoned using /summon minecraft:zombie_horse ~ ~ ~ {Tame:1b}
.
Statistics[edit | edit source]
Zombie horses are spawned with constant health of 15, speed of 0.2, and have a jump strength ranging from 0.4–1.0, tending toward the average 0.7.
Sounds[edit | edit source]

Issues[edit | edit source]
Issues relating to "Zombie Horse" are maintained on the bug tracker. Issues should be reported and viewed there.
Java Edition
- MC-279793 – Mounting horses, donkeys, mules, zombie horses, skeleton horses, and camels no longer forces you to face forward
- MC-102949 – Can't interact with a skeleton and a zombie horse that have been spawned from a spawn egg
- MC-270552 – When mounting horses, donkeys, mules, zombie horses, skeleton horses, llamas, and camels, your vertical rotation aligns with the rotation of the respective mob
- MC-154204 – Zombie and Skeleton Horses does not despawn, ever.
Bedrock Edition
- MCPE-165390 – Skeleton/Zombie Horse's & Donkey/Mule's saddles and chests are outdated or errors
- MCPE-186490 – Horses are the same size as Skeleton Horses and Zombie Horses
Zombie Horses are an unsupported mob and as such issues relating to them may not be fixed.
