Add-on is a video game modding API for game customization in all versions of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. They allow certain additions and modifications of the game through a combination of resource packs and behavior packs.[1] They are officially supported by Mojang Studios, who provide official Creator Documentation for the community.

Behavior packs can modify the content of the game with the ability to change entity behaviors, loot tables, spawn rules, items, recipes, world generation, and much more. They can also be used to create new entities, blocks, and items, and often used in conjunction with resource packs to create unique experiences that wouldn't be possible in the base game.[2]

Previously, standalone add-ons were not available, and needed to be packaged with a world to be sold on the Marketplace. However, as of February 2024, individual add-ons can now be sold separately on the Marketplace.[3] All Marketplace content is submitted by official Minecraft partners and is approved by the Minecraft Content Team. All purchased content instantly syncs to a player's Microsoft account unless they are not signed into their Xbox profile, in which case it is saved locally to the player's device.

In addition to the Marketplace, there are community websites dedicated to hosting community-made add-ons although such add-ons may only loaded on PCs and phones, whereas consoles can only access those add-ons through Realms Plus.

Add-on was hinted at in a post by Searge on August 12, 2016, stating "There will be news about the API at Minecon."[4] The next day it was confirmed by Grum to be a modding API for Bedrock Edition (formerly called Pocket Edition, or MCPE),[5] and at MINECON 2016, the plan and roadmap for the development of add-ons were outlined.

Add-ons are usually added to the Marketplace every Wednesday, although occasionally appearing on other days. Free add-ons are released as part of special events, for occasions such as to promote the release of A Minecraft Movie, for Minecraft's 15 Years celebration and eventful the McDonald's X A Minecraft Movie promotion.

Quotes Edit

Within Minecraft, there are so many ways to be creative and build the worlds of your dreams. But when you want to extend Minecraft even further and introduce new mobs, items and other artifacts into your world, you’ll want to go to the next level of creation by building new Add-On packs that can transform Minecraft.
