Various blobs, in the form of patches of ore, dirt, diorite, granite, and gravel.

A blob[1][2][3] is a terrain feature consisting of a natural deposit of ores or other blocks in the ground.

Generation

Players can come across these blobs in caverns or anywhere where there is natural stone. Underground deposits of dirt and gravel are generated in this step, followed by the more precious ores: coal, iron, gold, redstone, diamond, emerald (in mountains biomes) and lapis lazuli. They can form only in stone, andesite, diorite and granite (also in their polished variants, replacing parts of structures), and do not replace each other or any other block. Note that two or more blobs can form next to each other and make it look like a blob made of more than one material.

The Nether

This section is missing information about: Java Edition patches, do they match Bedrock; 20w21a basalt deltas changes; does soul sand truly generate as a blob? apparently it doesn't show up in the same region of code}.

  1. can replace the same type block, if the replaced block aren't part of the said blob.
  2. a b c d This distribution follows its own rules: instead of a minimum and a maximum height, it is based on a center height and a spread value. By default, these values are set to 16 and 16 for Lapis Lazuli and 8 and 16 for Ancient Debris. Meaning that Lapis Lazuli and Ancient Debris generate mostly around level 15; i.e. a periodic gaussian distribution.
  3. This is the extra rolls for gold ore in badlands biomes.
  4. a b Ancient Debris can generate in 2 different ways.

History

This section is missing information about: other editions' information, all the 1.13 changes and 21w08a tuff and 21w10a lush caves clay blob generation and details.

Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.
Java Edition Infdev
Minecraft InfdevBlob generation is implemented.
InfdevAdded underground blobs of dirt and gravel.
Java Edition Alpha
v1.0.1Added blobs of redstone ore
Java Edition Beta
1.2Added blobs of lapis lazuli ore
1.6Fixed ore density varying per quadrant from the center of the world.
1.8The highest layer for some ores has been lowered by 2.
Java Edition
1.3.1Added blobs of emerald ore to then-Extreme Hills and Extreme Hills Edge biomes.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Emerald ore now generates as single blocks.
?Stone monster eggs now generate in blobs.
1.5Added blobs of nether quartz ore to the Nether.
1.8Added blobs of granite, diorite and andesite to overworld generation.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Added custom worlds allowing for ore customisation.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Ore now generates faster.
1.10Added magma block blobs to the Nether. Whether they generated differently upon introduction and were changed later is unknown.
Added extra gold ore blobs to then-Mesa and related biomes.
1.16Added ancient debris, which generates in the Nether in two different blob specifications.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Added nether gold ore to the Nether.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Added blobs of blackstone and gravel to Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest and Warped Forest biomes.
Added underground soul sand blobs to the soul sand valley.
Basalt and blackstone can be replaced by nether ores, like with netherrack.[is this the correct version?]
1.16.2No longer use 32-bit floats for generation, which used to cause a crash when using mods to generate terrain between 67,108,864 and 134,217,728 blocks.
Upcoming Java Edition
October 3, 2020Announced copper ore, which generates in a different vein type from all other ores.
1.17The height limit was expanded down to Y=-64. All ores are temporary generating from Y=-64 instead of Y=0 [needs testing]
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Ore distribution has changed
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Ore distribution has changed once again
Iron ore no longer generates due to a bug.[4]
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Iron ore now generates again.
Redstone ore generation is tweaked, removing flat ore distribution under Y=12.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Ore distribution has changed for a third time.
Lua error in Module:Version_link at line 117: attempt to concatenate local 'text' (a nil value).Ore distribution changed again, but only if the Caves and Cliffs Datapack is applied to a world.
