Icon discussion

If you have any suggestions for the icons on the main page, please post them in this section. Some unresolved(?) points from the previous archive are:

Thanks! | violine1101 (talk) 03:53, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'd like the Biomes icon to be changed to a map or something, because the current one doesn't suggest biomes, and it's also recency bias. Gugalcrom123 (talk) 09:22, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I guess instead, we could do layers of leaves similar to:
Ayaan 20:42, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think that the layered leaves would look messy. Maybe the trees
Miner(talk contributions) 10:30, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree. What about this?
I don't like the trees as much as it seems too fan-made / a creation not from Mojang Ayaan 13:26, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I like the layered tree design it looks vary pretty REXTHEREBEL228 (talk) 16:20, 21 December 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What about a grass block? That's something most biomes have. I do agree with your map option, though. Kavan (talk) 19:00, 24 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think that's a too common block, especially because it appears on a lot of biomes, like you said. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  23:29, 24 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Exactly-it symbolizes more or less all biomes, making it a perfect icon. But like I said, the map would work just as well. Kavan (talk) 16:06, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, what I'm saying is that it might not be exactly perfect precisely because it's so common. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:12, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So what do you suggest? I'm thinking map, but if we have to go for a block I'm out of ideas on that one. After all, I think it's kind of stupid to have a block that only appears in one biome to symbolize all biomes. Kavan (talk) 16:14, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm also mostly out of ideas, to be honest. I don't want to sound like I'm saying your idea is terrible, but I also want to give feedback. :) Idea: red sand. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:17, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, that's an interesting option. Isn't red sand only in badlands? Honestly, I don't know-I've never been in the badlands at all, except for one time when I was running around a desert and found it. Kavan (talk) 16:19, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
My reasoning is that it's A) uncommon B) adds color but isn't too bright and C) a variant of a common block. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:22, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah, I see. I'm currently designing the novel page. Is there a way that other people can help with that? And how do you place an icon along with a page on it? Kavan (talk) 16:25, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What about a steve/zombie face? YarKingRecRoom (talk) 17:18, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The order of icons should be changed, with the most important, contentful ones (blocks, mobs, items) being first. Gugalcrom123 (talk) 09:23, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's a good idea. Some of the ones that are less important could be moved to a less prominent position. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  13:58, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We should add farming (in previous discussion there was 2 support and 1 weak support) Miner(talk contributions) 09:27, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't like the slime icon for mobs. I propose creeper head or pig
Miner(talk contributions) 09:32, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I like the pig. I prefer showing a whole mob but I agree the slime isn't that recognisable. Gugalcrom123 (talk) 10:11, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's true. The slime isn't very recognizable, seeing as how new players really don't know what it is. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  13:57, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd say creeper head, since it is an iconic mob and is only found in Minecraft, and also it is something must people think of when they hear "Minecraft." Kavan (talk) 19:03, 24 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I love slimes a lot but yeah, it needs to be changed. Mineifications (talk) 01:53, 10 March 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not actually sure about fishing. While I myself really enjoy it, it's quite obscure and people don't really know its usefulness. (Seriously, when I get two string, I never run out of food.) But I don't actually think many people want or need to know about it. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  14:02, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe merging it with farming somehow? Gugalcrom123 (talk) 20:02, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's s good idea, but how... -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  20:21, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, fishing doesn't really apply with farming Brody0727 (talk) 18:16, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd like a Servers or Minigames icon, because many play on them a lot. Gugalcrom123 (talk) 20:03, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But that's unofficial content, which we do not document. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  20:21, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Go to the edit version and place it there in the "Minecraft Media" that I created. Kavan (talk) 18:56, 26 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just saw this thread. Anyway - my suggestions:
Order
Crafting | Smelting | Blocks | Items | Mobs | Biomes | Redstone | History
Structures | Enchanting | Brewing | Effects | Commands | Trading | Smithing | Tutorials
I'll be following the order above for my suggestions. I'm not going to care if there's a consensus or not - I'll still provide my ideas no matter what.
Crafting, Smelting
Crafting table and furnace. These are trivial.
Blocks
Grass Block or Stone.
Items
Diamond Pickaxe (current icon).
Mobs
Creeper - either the head or the full render.
Biomes
A filled map. A map is a representation of the world IRL, and I think it should also apply here.
Redstone
Redstone Dust (current icon).
History
A book and quill. History will always change as the days pass also get written into the books, and a book and quill is literally an editable book.
Structures
A village.
Enchanting
Enchanting Table (current icon).
Brewing
Brewing Stand. I really don't like how potions themselves are used - If all the other mechanics used its toolstation, I see no reason why brewing isn't consistent with it. It's not like the icon for Enchanting is an enchanted book.
Effects
The Poison effect icon (current icon). It's clear that it isn't an item in-game, and it suits the section well.
Commands
Command Block (current icon).
Trading
Emerald (current icon) or Villager - either the head or the full render.
Smithing
Smithing Table or Netherite Upgrade Template. Same reason as Brewing.
Tutorials
Lectern (current icon).
Enjoy. 3A |  T  C  11:15, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am  Neutral on the changing of the order. I don't mind if that does or does not change.
I  Extremely strong support for the changing on the icons. Clear, accessible icons and images is very important. You shouldn't need to guess what the icon belongs to. Ayaan 16:50, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oppose The consistently most used pages on the wiki are "Trading" and "Brewing". Putting these near the end is not be in the interest of most readers. | violine1101 (talk) 21:57, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Where do you find these statistics, by the way? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  23:29, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The view metrics dashboard is not currently public, but Weird Gloop is currently working on making it available via a special page. | violine1101 (talk) 15:51, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. Things was, I've seen you cite info from frequent page searches and stuff like that. Ah well, they're making it a special page :) -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  15:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the most dominant things among the most often searched should be how we do the order. I agree with Violine mainly, but I think 3A has a point too. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  23:30, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I disagree with trading and brewing being first, as while they themselves may be the most searched pages, block- or item-related content, not just the main Blocks page, is likely to be more searched for. Also, blocks, items etc. are essential, but you can play without trading or potions, which are secondary mechanics. A new player shouldn't read Trading first. Gugalcrom123 (talk) 09:13, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The main wiki page isn't here to indicate what people should be reading, but to provide the info that they want to read. - Jack McKalling (talk) 11:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Blocks are the elements of the game. Searches for trading shouldn't be compared to searches for blocks, but to the sum of searches for all block types, since this is what the blocks page does. Gugalcrom123 (talk) 14:38, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The "Blocks" page is not useful for most readers. People rarely need to view all the blocks, but they do need to know all the trades. The point of pages on MP is to have easy access to the most used pages, which is a philosophy we've adopted when we redesigned it during the fork. GIM Dianliang233 T C 14:40, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Only very technical players need a list of all trades. If you want I can provide a compromise:
Blocks | Mobs | Items | Crafting | Trading | Brewing | Smelting | Enchanting | Redstone | Commands | Biomes | Structures | Effects | Smithing | History | Tutorials
Gugalcrom123 (talk) 14:52, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Our page view data suggests otherwise. The dashboard is not available ATM (Weird Gloop is moving the data to a special page) but trading and brewing is definitely used way more than the "fundamentals". If only the very technical players use these pages, we would see datapack/redstone related pages on the top of the list as well, but we don't. GIM Dianliang233 T C 14:59, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Of course, because the only point of the game is building farms. If someone wants these pages they will still have them a click away, but a new player can't be introduced to the game with trading! Gugalcrom123 (talk) 15:00, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think you're both right in a way. We simply need both the main things and the most needed things first. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  14:43, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Personally, I think the links we have at the moment, their icons and their order is completely fine and I oppose changing them for now. They've just been changed after some discussion and I'd prefer if they didn't change every few months.--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 15:05, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe the "Smelting" icon could be a lit furnace, as it shows the action? Just a suggestion, the idle furnace works just as well. Jurta (talk) 18:15, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know, that was opposed previously. Good idea, though... -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  18:20, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree that history should be a book and a pen, I assure you that in my first months in Minecraft I didn't even know what a clock was. Lapis lo zoli (talk) 09:03, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd like the Brewing icon to be a brewing stand to be a bit more obvious about what the page is about, the Smithing icon will be a smithing table to match the Crafting and Smelting icon. Agemlover3636 (talk) 12:37, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I still disagree with the items icon. The diamond pickaxe may seem good and iconic, but it's a valuable item and I think that the items icon should be something early game like an apple or a piece of raw iron or coal. Anything but valuable items. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  15:15, 11 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I also argue that the Dungeons icons of Artifacts, Mobs, and Enchantments are not the best choices. I think that the totem of shielding should be used for Artifacts, something that's not the key golem for Mobs, and Unchanting for enchantments. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  15:20, 11 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I also have an idea for the mobs icon: Blaze. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  15:56, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question

I notice that in the description of Minecraft Legends, it says that it is a "real time" action strategy game. At least for me, it's questionable to call it "real time" because it hardly is, at least the way I see it. Should this be changed? Why is this even here in the first place? Am I mistaking its meaning? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  15:59, 24 December 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Real time" means that it is not a turn-based game. You can perform actions at the same time as your opponent, instead of having to pause and wait for them to do something. Rampage455 (talk) 01:07, 25 December 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. Even still, I think it's a little misleading. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  02:09, 25 December 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What About Novels?

Just a question: will novels be shown as part of the main page at some point? They are a legit part of Minecraft, so shouldn't they be on the main page? Also, novels are annoying to access when the only thing you can do is search up novels and find what you're looking for after about an hour.Kavan (talk) 19:01, 24 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If anyone has any thoughts about this, let me know. I just want to be able to find Novels on the main page. Kavan (talk) 16:12, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think it'd be good to have more non-game related Minecraft stuff in the main page in general. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:14, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know, right? But novels are something that I want to help with first, you know? So if there's anything I can do to help with that notify me, please. Kavan (talk) 16:16, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Novels would definitely be a good step on the right direction. One thing you could do is perhaps going onto the main page editcopy and try putting some stuff there. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:19, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thx for the advice Kavan (talk) 16:20, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do I have to attach pages and stuff? And make pages, for that matter? Kavan (talk) 16:28, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And how do I place icons? Kavan (talk) 16:33, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd say make the section into "Minecraft media" (see Minecraft (franchise)#Media) and place icons for novels, the Minecraft movie, etc. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:34, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How? Kavan (talk) 16:36, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I get your point, but since Novels and Media are two different platforms, I was thinking do a division of work, you know? Kavan (talk) 16:37, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not really. They're both non game content, so I think they should be the same section. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:57, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And how do I place icons? I tried copying and pasting an image but it didn't work. Answer this first, please. Kavan (talk) 16:38, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I mostly just copy the existing code from other icons and try to figure it out... -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:57, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. Are you able to see other people's editcopies or no? I'm currently working on the Novels section. Kavan (talk) 17:03, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's one page, so everyone can see it and edit it. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:11, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Gotcha. Can you go to mine, then, and tell me how good it's going right now? Kavan (talk) 17:13, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, your edits removed some other sections that were necessary, so I'll have to undo those and then add your sections. Okay? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:15, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I would like to see a full section in the main page dedicated to other Minecraft franchise mediums. It could include novels, the movie, the series, collaborations, etc..
Generally, the wiki is missing some kind of portals I reckon. The closest we have to that are navboxes, but they serve different kind of functions. - Zamburger (talk) 17:13, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. Go to below and you can help.
Kavan (talk) 17:15, 25 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Adding a whole new section is a bit more difficult than editing the editcopy though - it requires completely reconsidering the layout of the page first and then editing accordingly Minecraft Wiki/styles.css. Zamburger (talk) 10:35, 26 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I know that much Kavan (talk) 16:05, 26 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Icon Discussion (Continued): Replacing Icons Idea

I have a few ideas for the icons on the main page:

-Brewing: a brewing stand, since you need it to make potions

-Mobs: a creeper, since it's the most iconic mob of Minecraft (and one of the first three things I think of when I hear "Minecraft")

-Blocks: dirt or a grass block, since they are the most common blocks/ stone would work as well, since it covers the entire Overworld

-Items: a stick, since that's probably the first item anyone ever gets in a Survival World

-Biomes: a map, because a map can cover all biomes, therefore symbolizing Biomes

-Structures: a mineshaft, since it's much more common than any other structure/ Nether Portal ruins could work too, if we want to talk multiple dimensions

-MCD Gear: Mystery Armor, because it's easier to remember than the robes

-MCD Heros: Hal, since he's used for the emotes and is therefore shown more in the wiki than Hex

-MCD DLCs: The Jungle Awakens Island, since it was the first DLC/ Creeping Winters is also a good one

-MCD Enchantments: Radiance, since that's the first enchantment I think of when I hear "MCD Enchantments" Kavan (talk) 16:19, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Brewing: I don't like the brewing stand idea because we can be a lot more creative with a potion.
Mobs: Too vertical to for with the others.
Blocks: we can be creative with this, so why do something basic?
Items: a stick has almost no shape, it wouldn't fit.
Biomes: doesn't fit.
Structures: doesn't fit and villages are common anyway.
MCD enchantments: that works be weird because there's two versions of that enchant. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  16:50, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Come on, man. I'm just telling you what I think makes sense. I still stand with my biomes, structures, brewing, and MCD Enchantment ideas. However:
Mobs: Wither/ Ender Dragon- both are also iconic mobs in Minecraft and only belong to Minecraft. Classic mobs, as well; they've been added before the Nether Update.
Items: Iron Tool: don't know what tool, but iron is a starter item for anyone that doesn't know how to mine. Maybe Iron Sword? I know that's the first item I craft in Minecraft the moment I get iron.
Blocks: I honestly don't know. Bricks are kind of uncommon, and when I play, I rarely get to make them-usually because I can't find any clay. Just saying Bricks are a bad choice. Kavan (talk) 17:00, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, does know how to mine-made a little typo, there. Kavan (talk) 17:01, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's almost like you just want to get rid of the current icons. Diamond pickaxe is perfect for the items icon. Bricks signifies building. StizzurpXDD(talk) 17:08, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Diamond pickaxe is too valuable in my opinion... -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:12, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Agreed. Plus, sometimes people don't even get to find diamond if they play Hardcore games have the time (like me...) Kavan (talk) 17:14, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
True, but like I said, bricks are rare to make, since clay is only swamps and isn't really used in Minecraft building that much. Kavan (talk) 17:20, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Actually clay is found just about anywhere. Look at the page. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:21, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Mobs- I don't think the dragon would fit too well, being the largest mob and all that. Plus the wither is something hardly anyone even sees.
Items- how about an iron ingot?
Blocks- true, but I think bricks are still recognizable. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:06, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok...
Mobs: wither skeleton or blaze, since they are also fairly iconic-blaze being unique to Minecraft while the wither skeleton is used to make the wither
Items: good enough, if you ask me; iron ingot is an item, after all
Blocks: this one I will never agree on-like I said, bricks are not that iconic, and even if they were, unless you spawn in a swamp, you'll have a rough time finding clay to make them. What about a type of wood planks? Maybe acadia or oak? Kavan (talk) 17:11, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oak planks isn't a bad idea, though I won't keep arguing over bricks. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:12, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Other idea: raw iron has more shape, so... -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:14, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
true Kavan (talk) 17:14, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In my opinion, all the icons are good as they are, but the cherry leaves should be updated to pale oak leaves, leaf litter or a Firefly Bush. StizzurpXDD(talk) 17:04, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think those are kind of new though, maybe go with older blocks? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:07, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There should be no problem with featuring new blocks/items if they look good. StizzurpXDD(talk) 17:20, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Except for the fact that they're rare and unknown? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:21, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, if it's rare, then I get your point; if they're common, however, I don't see any problem with making it an icon, since it'll be known eventually. Kavan (talk) 17:24, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It really depends on which icon, plus a balance is good. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:28, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd actually rather we never discussed the icons again for the foreseeable future unless a change is deeply necessary, and no change should be necessary because we've already had such extensive discussions about it. - Harristic / Talk 17:09, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm just trying to help with the icons, and some just don't make sense in their category. Kavan (talk) 17:12, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You haven't explained which don't make sense. Some could be changed to make a bit more sense, but I don't want us to keep changing these icons every month or so, they've changed so much already. - Harristic / Talk 17:14, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's true, we should wait at least one more month before changing anything. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:15, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I can tell. It's just that some icons only symbolize a certain part of that subject (ie, a potion for brewing when it should be a brewing stand to symbolize all of the brewing things). Kavan (talk) 17:16, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I disagree. If anybody doesn't like something on the homepage, or someone has a suggestion which could benefit it, there should be no restrictions on it. StizzurpXDD(talk) 17:22, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Exactly. Like I said, I'm just trying to be helpful. Kavan (talk) 17:23, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But we shouldn't be changing these every two seconds. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:28, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, fair enough, but I only changed them twice on the edit copy; then I stopped, because there's no point in doing it again and again if it's just going to be undone. How about we discuss until next week or something like that to find out what icons we want? Kavan (talk) 17:30, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Let's let everyone join in and wait for more opinions, shall we? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:35, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is no restriction, I think any change at this point will have a practically non-existent benefit and that having this discussion so often is not great. I appreciate Kavan trying to help, I only think any change is not needed. - Harristic / Talk 17:35, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know, it's just that as a new member, I know that if I came to the wiki today and Isaw the icons I would wonder why it's not an icon that could encompass all of that subject. Kavan (talk) 17:37, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I really don't think this is something that lots of people pay attention to or think about. If an icon didn't make sense, more people would think about it, but they all make sense. Some could make slightly more sense, but that is negligible. - Harristic / Talk 17:41, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fair point. It's just that some could be made to make more sense (ie, one type of potion only symbolizes that potion, but a brewing stand symbolizes all of brewing). Kavan (talk) 17:45, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe we can discuss this, but not change anything? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:37, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Then what's the point? Or are you saying don't change anything until a certain point in time? Kavan (talk) 17:39, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I mean we should make sure that we have consensus but not change stuff every five seconds, y'know? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:40, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah I know. I didn't say change every five seconds; I was saying wait for people to get in this discussion and discuss the icons that make sense by a certain time, and which should be added. Kavan (talk) 17:42, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I actually have to are with you on the brewing stand; the bottle color on the potion isn't the best. Also, maybe enchanting should be an enchanted book. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  17:56, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Enchanting...gotta say, no. Enchanting tables encompass enchanting, unless you're talking about the weapon+anvil mechanism. Kavan (talk) 17:58, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
With anvils it's actually more stuff than the enchanting table, like stuff that's already enchanted. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  18:00, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
hmmm...fair enough. Kavan (talk) 18:01, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I actually think the most common/iconic thing of the category should be the icon, like grass block for Block, iron pickaxe (or any pickaxe) for Item, plains or forest for Biome, and a desert temple or village for structure. I'm not sure about Brewing, because I think potions themselves and brewing stands are equally important. I don't play MCD that much so I'm not sure about those. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 07:20, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also shouldn't this be part of the discussion up top? Why is it necessary to create a new section? --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 07:21, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Are you aware of how long this section is on it's own? I just thought this would be easier for everyone to access inside of trying to find this in the middle of that hive of activity. Kavan (talk) 16:16, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, I mean it's just gonna be more complicated if that other topic is still active. Did you notice that people are still posting in the other section? It just makes things overcomplicated and harder to find the discussions. I don't think we're supposed to start a new topic about the same thing until the old one is closed with {{close topic}}. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 03:12, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
By people still making comments, do you mean pretty much just me? It's mostly inactive. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  03:14, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah. And also that Kavan himself wrote "lol why". --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 03:16, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, I agree that discussion with continue in the old topic but we didn't necessarily need to do anything with this topic. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  03:24, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, that's because I was wondering why the random suggestion was a fletching table. Then again, it is random for a reason... Kavan (talk) 17:44, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose changing icons once again, they were changed just a few months ago.--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 18:29, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So? I'm not saying change them now, just figure out which icons would serve best and then eventually act on it. Kavan (talk) 18:42, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And continue this discussion till then? If you don't want them to change right now or you know that they wouldn't change right now, what is the point of the discussion at this time? You can make another discussion when you feel like they should be changed right then. - StizzurpXDD(talk) 03:36, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But discussions take time! -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  03:41, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not denying it. It is just that it shouldn't be that long for such a minor change. Also, why can't this discussion take place when we need to change the icons instead of starting a discussion to change the icon in the future? - StizzurpXDD(talk) 03:44, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree with your point. I don't get why are we discussing to change an icon when we're not actually going to change it? --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 04:59, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
God, so much drama while I was getting some shut-eye. Plus, the whole point of a discussion is to plan; that's why it's a discussion for the future-like all discussions. Kavan (talk) 16:07, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Agreed, man. It takes time, and if we want those icons to stay the way they are, we'll need a long discussion where everyone settles on what should be best as an icon. That simple. Kavan (talk) 17:43, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
User:Kavan – Minecraft Wiki Click link to go to my user page, which has the (new and improved) suggestions for icons. Discuss if you want. Kavan (talk) 16:47, 7 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, I think we should revive this discussion, because the main page is being redesigned and we should probably get all the changes over with at one time. Any ideas? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  00:03, 8 March 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Weekly Polls

I suggest adding weekly polls to the main page. Our wiki supports the AJAX Poll extension and to implement this we would need to add the style to the poll table and slightly change the main page markup. Weekly polls will encourage people to visit the wiki weekly and thus help the wiki by increasing its traffic and making it appear higher in Google Search. I took this idea from the RuneScape Wiki main page where it is nicely implemented.  — MetroKopUA (talk) 02:08, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I like this idea, but I'll do what I usually do in big discussions and wait for replies before adding my support. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  02:15, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Is there enough space for this? We already have Minecraft Dungeons and Legends on the second row, and possibly, moving Did you know box very bottom per Main Page/editcopy. Outrowed (talk) 02:23, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, as I can see on Minecraft Wiki/editcopy, we have just enough space to put the poll at the very right of the did you know section. We can use 2/3 of the horizontal space for the "did you know" section and 1/3 for the poll. But yet we don't have enough comments to make any decisions so it is worth to listen to others opinions. — MetroKopUA (talk) 02:28, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just saying, I'll be strongly opposing this if it's not mobile friendly. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  02:34, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On the runescape wiki polls are wrapped with div.nomobile. But, according to my (tests on that wiki) polls work just fine on mobile if you add styles. — MetroKopUA (talk) 02:42, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was about to ask this since I didn't see it while browsing their main page in mobile. Outrowed (talk) 02:43, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

FYI although the wiki does support a ajaxpoll it's in a broken state. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 02:50, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What exactly is broken? Are you talking about the styles that might be hard to set up. Or about bad working JS? — MetroKopUA (talk) 03:15, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All anonymous users are treated as one user. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 03:25, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah. That'd be a problem. Most readers don't have accounts. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  03:27, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, what kind of polls will there be? Like, what kind of questions? -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  02:53, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's an interesting question. As I previously mentioned the reason for adding polls is to encourage people to visit the wiki weekly so we are not making polls for collecting data. I would recommend making polls about minecraft (e.g. "what edition do you play on?"). But first thing we should figure out is if it is possible to add styles that poll looks just fine on both desktop and mobile. — MetroKopUA (talk) 02:58, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. But the edition thing is useful info, just saying. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  03:05, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose - The RuneScape wiki doesn't have a weekly poll by a long shot. Their most recent poll was created on 4 September 2024, more than 5 months ago. This highlights that the poll feature is not something that can attract users for a long time. Also, the main motive for readers coming to this wiki is to seek information. The only ones who will actually participate or even care about these polls are the editors, and adding something to the wiki's main page just for the editors does not sit well with me.
Additionally, the poll would have to be implemented on both PC and mobile, and for that, it would need to change the placement of several boxes to make it fit in. You suggested that it can be placed beside the "Did you know" section. The downside to this is that the poll is not something most traffic will be coming for in the wiki, and placing it so far down the page would even miss the editors who would have been likely to participate if it were placed above. - StizzurpXDD(talk) 03:59, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Now that you've mentioned it, since the poll is likely going to attract more editors than the readers, a more appropriate place for that would be the Wiki Discord server rather than the main page. Outrowed (talk) 04:41, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, many somewhat active editors (including myself) don't have a Discord account, and that might not help the wiki appear higher in Google Search if it isn't actually part of the wiki. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 13:41, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
 Support as it's a great idea in general. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 13:40, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose- what's the point of it? Just to attract users? That's not really a good idea, since what do the polls do to attract them in the first place? And why do we need to get more people on the wiki? If someone's interested in Minecraft, they'll go to the fandom or the wiki.
Kavan (talk) 16:16, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I mean, I think it encourages editors, not readers, to do something every week and be more active. This would be traffic, which makes this wiki higher in SEO. --MinecraftExp123(talk|contribs) 02:54, 7 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Redesign survey

There have been many suggestions on the main page that just wouldn't fit our current format. Thus a redesign might be needed. To see how our readers think about this, I've created a survey: [1]. I plan to add the survey link to the main page, site notice, and Discord #news channel by the end of this week. Suggestions to the question would be appreciated. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 04:26, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Options should go from "very unnecessary" on the left to "very useful" on the right, to be consistent with the very difficult/very easy questions. Other than that the survey seems pretty good.--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 13:47, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
One question: For how long would you keep this survey active? - StizzurpXDD(talk) 13:48, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think two to three weeks would be a good amount of time. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 13:50, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looks good to me! I think it will be helpful. - Harristic / Talk 13:53, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's a good idea. Good info could come from this. I have many opinions on the things, but I also think that the "how easy do you think it is to navigate the page" and the mobile question are a little redundant, maybe for the first day that it's desktop and give an "I don't know, I'm not on <mobile/desktop>" for those. -~- Nerdyguy2000   Talk   Edits  14:48, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Why do we need the survey? I can't access the survey for some reason, so I don't know what it says and what's the point of it. Kavan (talk) 16:20, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's about how useful do people find the current main page sections, what they would like see changed, and what they would like to see removed. I've especially included a question about splitting the MP into portals. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 17:08, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've improved the survey by adding images and adding/removing some questions. Please (re)check the survey and leave your thoughts about it here! GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 17:07, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the message! (It's really quiet today...) Two things:
  1. I still can't check the survey. It just says "error" whenever I wait for it to load. So, sorry, can't do anything there. Suggestion: Make a user page that's editable and can be edited by making comments, etc, and some could even make new questions for you to consider.
  2. Could you explain the survey a little bit more? I woke up about an hour ago and I can barely think straight, so my usual cleverness is a little out of control.
Kavan (talk) 17:13, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"How visually pleasing is the current main page design?" should have the negative option on the left (1) and the positive option on the right (5).--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 17:18, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wait, let me guess: the survey is for an entire reconstruction of the main page? Oh. Well,  Soft Support; not everything about the main page system is bad, but it could use some changing.
Strong Support if you're willing to make, like, a project on this-add people to the project, make different types of designs, etc. Kavan (talk) 17:30, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

meta:Mojang IP request GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 10:14, 12 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It would be nice if some historical information was included. I understand that this was once an official Minecraft Wiki due to developer involvement (maybe this was back during the Gamepedia years), and after Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft, Microsoft demanded that the "official" designation be removed from any property they don't directly control. Mojang was cool with it being the official wiki before the Microsoft acquisition. ~Anachronist (talk) 03:22, 19 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would speculate that the primary reason why Mojang was no longer cool with it is Fandom, considering the wiki existed 2014-2009=5 years before Mojang was acquired and the designation lasted for 2021-2014=7 years after. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 04:24, 19 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

12-Eyed portal trivia is wrong

There is a trivia which says when spawning there is a change of 10^-12 of having a 12 eyed portal filled. But, 12 eyed portal seeds are actually outside of random seed generation, which makes this trivia wrong. Please fix anyone with power to do the same. Minecarftwiki (talk) 04:47, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is correct. Please refer to End portal#Generation. GIM Dianliang233 (talk) 06:45, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If a fact is already described in the body of an article, it doesn't need to be mentioned in trivia in any other article. @Minecarftwiki where did you find this in trivia? If you see it in a trivia section, remove it. Not only is it described in End portal but also in End portal frame. It is not a valid entry for a trivia section. ~Anachronist (talk) 18:13, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
