Capes are commemorative items that are worn on the back of the player. Compared to skins, capes cannot be custom-made and have to be earned. They are also locked into your respective account and cannot be transferred. Players can earn capes by playing, participating, or attending on certain events, and some are earned by contributing something to the game. Wearing a cape changes the appearance of a worn elytra, fitting the look of the respective cape. Capes are purely cosmetic and do not alter any gameplay.

Various mods offer third-party capes for players. However, these capes are only visible to players with those respective mods installed usually. Only official capes that are stored in Mojang Studios' database are featured below, alongside Marketplace capes and April Fools' capes.

Obtaining

Java Edition

In Java Edition, capes can either be equipped on the Skin creation menu in the Minecraft Launcher, or in the Profile Page on the Minecraft website. Some capes have been given to all players who fulfilled certain criteria. Many of these capes are tied to events and can only be obtained within specific time frames.

Other capes were manually given out to players in the community throughout the years. Some players who have suggested certain features have been awarded with capes based on their suggestion, and these capes are typically owned by a single player only. Mojang employees are also given capes, with older employees owning older versions of the capes. Volunteers in various programs (such as bug tracker moderators, Crowdin proofreaders, and Java Realms mapmakers), winners of Mojang's other games' tournaments, and more were also given capes. Only a few hundred players around the world have such a cape, with some capes being owned by a single individual only.

Bedrock Edition

In Bedrock Edition, capes can be equipped in the Capes section on the Character Creator. Since they are Character Creator items, they are assigned a rarity. As of now, all available capes are Legendary, with the exception of the original version of The Pan Cape!. Most of Bedrock Edition's capes released starting from 2022 are available for both Java and Bedrock editions, with exceptions such as the Progress Pride cape; and the Cherry Blossom cape, which was released seperately for Java and Bedrock editions. Mojang employees also receive a cape, using the current Mojang Studios cape design.Capes are also available as part of some skins included in certain skin packs. Most notably, the MINECON 2016 Skin Pack included Steve and Alex skins wearing all MINECON capes from 2011 to 2016. However, these capes were locked to the skin pack, so custom skins can not be equipped with them.

MINECON capes

MINECON capes from 2011 to 2016 were obtainable by attending to that year's MINECON. Around 27,000 players have these capes on various accounts.[3] Initial MINECON events originally allowed you to simply buy a ticket to get the respective cape. However, that would soon be patched on later events and everyone had to attend the event in order to obtain the cape. On May 12, 2020, all unused MINECON cape links were disabled, making these capes impossible to obtain nowadays.

Shortly after their addition in Java Edition Beta 1.0 in December of 2010, two holiday-related capes were shown on all players.

These capes were only temporary overrides and not added to accounts, and these events have not reoccurred since.

Migrator cape Given to players who had migrated their Mojang or legacy account to a Microsoft account starting on July 9, 2021.[36][37][38][39] The cape was first teased in the migration announcement video,[40] and the texture file was hinted by Ined on Twitter on June 30, 2021.[41] It was speculated that instead of the Migrator cape, players were to be given a "Veteran cape" for each year they've played the game, due to discovered text files that read, "And... a special Veteran Cape for each year you've played Java Edition!". Snail cape This cape with a design resembling a snail and an elytra resembling vines was uploaded to a Mojang staging server on April 17, 2024 at around 9:00 EST by a Mojang employee working on the cape API at the time[44] Its design is most likely inspired by the employee's statue model of a snail.[45]
ICU cape #1 — This cape was made and added to the player profile made by the same Mojang employee working on and monitoring the cape API on April 17, 2024 and was changed from the Snail cape design to this ICU design on April 17, 2024 just before 17:00 EST as a response to the discoverers (people that found the Snail cape and ICU capes) sending API requests to the same player profile that had the Snail cape.[46]
ICU cape #2 — This design was made and added to the player profile made by the same Mojang employee working on and monitoring the cape API on April 17, 2024. It was changed to this design few minutes later the ICU cape #1 design was uploaded to the player profile made by the Mojang employee.[47]
Frog cape This design was most likely inspired by the developers posting frog images before announcing snapshots on Wednesays, or by the designer's statue models of frogs.[48][49] This cape was made by the same Mojang employee that made the Snail cape. This cape was first shown off as a cropped screenshot on X.[50]

Founder's cape

Given to players who claimed the Founder's Cape Skin Pack in the Marketplace when it was distributed as a promotion for the Character Creator during MINECON Live 2019. It looks visually similar to MINECON 2011's cape, with the exception of it being gold.

The cape was temporarily available for all players due to a bug.[51] When it got fixed, players who didn't originally have the cape lost access to it.[52]

On December 29, 2021, the price of the skin pack was changed to 10 million Minecoins to prevent people from claiming it after the deadline through exploits.

The Pan Cape! Given to all players in the Dressing Room.
Progress Pride Cape Given to all players who claimed it for free while it was available. The cape was part of a collection of Character Creator pieces that released on August 1, 2023 at 19:00 CET in the Marketplace during the Pride 2023 Sale, and was only available in certain regions of the world.

Given out to all players who owned both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition for Windows before June 6, 2022 prior to both editions merging into one bundle.[53] This cape was given out to eligible players starting Wednesday, August 31, 2022,[54] with it added into Bedrock Edition on August 22, 2022. Account migrations that took place after June 6, 2022, were not eligible for the cape.[54] Players that had gotten a free code for Bedrock Edition from the now-defunct Mojang website were also able to get the cape as well. Most players who were eligible for the cape have received it.[citation needed]

The existence of the cape was leaked when users found hidden elements in the Minecraft news page on August 12, 2022 that said "A special Vanilla cape for Java and Bedrock players".[55] The article gave errors until it was published on August 15, 2022 and deleted an hour later. A message was later posted on the official Minecraft Discord server which confirmed the cape.[56]

Users could unlock a Twitch Drop code for the cape by watching any Minecraft streamer with Drops enabled for at least 15 minutes. The Drop was released on May 15, 2024 and ended on May 31, 2024. All codes for the cape were deactivated on June 30, 2024. Players who unlocked the cape recieved it first on Bedrock Edition, with it slowly rolling out to Java Edition in July 2024.[58]

On May 20, 2024, a Java Edition player, _Kaptanbey0_, was spotted with the cape, which was later revoked on June 15, 2024. On July 1, 2024, the cape was slowly rolled out to all eligible players.[59]

Purple Heart
Follower's Cape

Given to players who redeemed the code during the 15th Minecraft Anniversary event. Users can unlock a redeemable code for the cape by watching a Minecraft livestream on TikTok. Depending on the user's region, there were additional requirements, such as watching for an amount of minutes, or having to type "minecraft" in the live chat. The event started on May 17, 2024 and ended on June 18, 2024.[58] Players who unlocked the cape received it first on Bedrock Edition, with it slowly rolling out to Java Edition in July 2024.[58] All codes for the cape were deactivated on June 30, 2024.

Players that lived in regions where TikTok is banned could not unlock the cape, unless another player gave them a code.

On June 12, 2024, a Java Edition player, sandycheeksvore, was spotted with the cape, which was later revoked on June 15, 2024. On July 1, 2024, the cape was slowly rolled out to all eligible players.[60][61]

Follower's
15th Anniversary Cape Given to players who clicked a button on the 15 Year anniversary page on minecraft.net from May 17, 2024 to June 21, 2024. The API endpoint allowed players to redeem it after June 21 which was patched four days later.

It was also referred to as the "Creepy Cape" on the main page of minecraft.net.[62]

15th Anniversary
MCC 15th Year Cape Given to players who attended the MCC x Minecraft 15th Anniversary Party.[63] This event server started on July 22, 2024. Players require 15 challenges to unlock this cape. 10 of them player must ware a special beanie hat in each of the mini-game to reach certain statistics. 4 of them were for completing each of the mini-games. The final challenge is the Mystery Cave which are 7 different tasks that are hinted at from cave drawings. Starting from July 22, 2024, a new task was revealed every day, making the cape obtainable from July 28, 2024 to August 5, 2024.

Although it was initially planned to be exclusive to Bedrock Edition, it was stated to come to Java Edition with a short delay as well, following the community feedback.[64][65] It was made available for Java after the event's conclusion starting August 5, 2024, as had been previously announced.

MCC 15th Year
MC Experience Cape Given to players who attended the Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue interactive event. After an attendee gets their ticket(s) validated at the event, they receive the corresponding number of cape codes via email, which can be redeemed on the minecraft.net redeem website.[66] The codes must be redeemed no later than 30 days after the event closes in the tour city where they were obtained.[67]

The cape was available for Java by October 23, 2024 for those who redeemed it on Bedrock Edition.[68]

Internal name of this cape in Bedrock Edition is LBE which means Location Based Entertainment.

Originally, the Java Edition Elytra texture used an unfinished monochrome dark purple design, which was initially uploaded to the Bedrock Edition staging server. On October 25, 2024, the Java Edition cape texture was updated to look the same as in Bedrock Edition, with a Zombie Villager face on the elytra wings.

Minecraft Experience
Mojang Office Cape Given to players who attended the Eerie Mojang Office Party event server. The event started on December 9, 2024. Five daily challenges require the player to different tasks that appear on the whiteboards in lobbies, making the cape obtainable from December 13, 2024 to December 20, 2024.[69]On December 7, 2024, the cape was confirmed as going to be cross-platform by a Mojang employee.[70] At 9:23 AM EST of the same day, it got added to the Java Edition back-end. The cape resembles the mine entrance that Steve finds during the prologue of the movie. Similar to both the Home Cape and the Menace Cape, Its elytra texture depicts the movie's version of Steve as portrayed by Jack Black as well, just on a grey background.

Six challenges require the player to different tasks that appear on the quest scroll, making the cape first obtainable on April 4, 2025. However, even when still visually locked, the sixth and final challenge could already be completed by April 2, 2025. After completing all six challenges on the server, players could immediately access the cape in both versions of the game.

Originally the event was supposed to end on April 7, 2025, it was extended by one week due to unprecedented demand, making the event end at April 14, 2025.[72]

On November 28, 2024, the store page for the Creeper Cape was updated to include the information that purchasing this cape would unlock an exclusive in-game cape.[74] However, this snippet was later removed from the page[75] and replaced with a promotion including a Bedrock Character Creator item shortly after.[76]

On December 9, 2024, Mojang announced the Eerie Mojang Office Party event server which, as stated in the article, would give players the cape after finishing 5 daily challenges.[69] The cape was latter renamed to the "Mojang Office cape."

Cape — This cape was added to the Minecraft Bedrock Marketplace server. It may have been a placeholder for a different cape e.g. the Eyeblossom Cape. It uses a purple texture similar to the early Minecraft Experience Cape texture with the elytra being a plain purple too similar to the early texture.

These capes were featured in a poll where readers could vote for the design of the MINECON 2011 cape.[81] The red creeper cape won with 42% of the votes[82] and was chosen as the cape design for MINECON 2011.[83] The blue cape with the pickaxe, which received 33% of the votes,[82] was later reused for MINECON 2012. The remaining cape designs, however, have never been used.

Added the MINECON 2016 skin pack, which contains skins with all Java Edition MINECON capes from 2011 to 2016, available to all players for a limited time.[85]
v0.15.10Capes no longer clip through armor.
When getting the MINECON 2016 skin pack capes, the player is now prompted to make a "free" purchase from their device's store. If the player is on Android and it prompts them for a payment, they can use the code MINECON2016 to get it for free.
October 7, 2016The MINECON 2016 skin pack is no longer available - it has been removed from all app stores and its redemption code is now expired. Players who obtained it while it was available are still able to use it.
