Spawn

By creaking heart

A creaking is an upcoming hostile mob that is spawned by creaking hearts at night. When a creaking is looked at, it does not move. It cannot be damaged, and is only killed when its respective creaking heart is destroyed.

Spawning

Creakings spawn when a creaking heart is activated. For this, it has to be placed between two pale oak logs with the same orientation as the heart and it must be nighttime. The creaking heart is not deactivated if the surrounding logs are broken or moved using pistons/sticky pistons.

Drops

They do not drop any items or experience on death for now.

Behavior

Creakings are hostile mobs, but unlike other regular monsters, the creaking only moves toward and attacks the player when they are outside the player's field of vision. While moving toward the player, they run at the same speed as a running player. When players are out of a unknown certain range from the creaking, its eyes will no longer be emissive and will become emissive again once the player is in a certain range.

Creakings are only killed when the creaking heart is broken, otherwise they are immune to player attacks except when hit by players in Creative mode, in which case, they die in one hit. It is unknown if they can be hurt through other sources of damage such as lightning or lava. Creakings do not step out of the 32 block radius from its creaking heart. If a player in survival mode tries to attack the creaking, it will send out particle beams leading to its creaking heart.

Creakings despawn during daytime. It is unknown if using a name tag on them is possible, and if so, if it will prevent them from despawning during daytime.

Creakings inflict 2HP♥ melee damage in an unknown difficulty.

Appearance

Creakings have tall, asymetrical bodies (unlike all other mobs) with skinny limbs, a tall head, and relativetly wide torso. Their body appears to be made of pale oak. Their legs and lower arms are covered in pale moss, with tendrils seemingly made of it sprouting from its head. They have 3 orange eyes in their head, similar to those of an enderman, assembled forming a triangle, which also glow in the dark.

History

September 24, 2024A version of the Minecraft Live page announcing the pale gardens and creaking is published, likely by mistake. It is taken down in the following hours.
September 28, 2024The creaking is offically announced at Minecraft Live 2024.

Trivia

  • The creaking is said to be the first “tree-like” mob in the game.
  • The creaking was made asymetrical to further mark its "creepy" aspect.
  • Some of the sounds used for the creaking are made using teeth, dead sticks and leaves, a creaky chair, a table, and pretzel sticks.[1]
  • During the Minecraft Live 2024 Developer after-show, Marco Ballabio claims that a group of creakings is called a crunch.[2]
  • The creaking shares several design elements with the early "stalker" incarnation of the warden, such as its long asymmetrical arms, and its head being skewed to the right side of its body instead of being centered.
