i think that since a lot of kids use this for research we should censor jack Black cussing on the quotes section.

thank you for understanding Minecraft wiki. Redstone Engineer (talk) 18:11, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oppose I don’t see a reason to censor a wiki not made for any specific group. It’d be one thing if we were talking about nudity or gore, a single curse word on a page kids probably wouldn’t gravitate towards is pretty needless. We’re not an elementary school history class. Realshow19 (talk) 18:17, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose for similar reasons as realshow Gwen Stacy (talk) 18:19, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Support - Minecraft is supposed to be a game for all: especially when many children play the game. I don't see the reason to keep curses when it can easily be censored. Additionally, there is no reason to limit ourselves to a more mature audience when we can make it accessible to all. Ayaan 18:31, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A single word in a single quote on a single page is hardly keeping everyone from using the site. Fuck is hardly even that offensive, I could understand if it was something genuinely offensive like a slur but it’s just an expression, and it’s very easy to confuse censored words. I saw curse words all the time as a kid, both online and in person, I knew not to actually say them until I was older. It’s not a big deal. Realshow19 (talk) 18:36, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Using similar words such as that can be considered a huge deal. Especially with TV being a massive rule to prevent curses being said during the day. As well, that word can mean directly to intercourse, further demonstrating why we shouldn't really keep it.
Just because your anecdote of understanding to not use swears may hold true for you, to some it isn't with some parents going ballistic for such 'simple' words being said or seen.
As well, I feel like if we do keep this one word, one page could encourage more usage of vulgar language. Ayaan 18:42, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That’s the thing though, we’re not a TV show. We’re not aiming the wiki at kids. We don’t ask parents questions for feedback. The point of the wiki is to be an archive, a source of information. We shouldn’t have to dumb it down because imaginary, presumed parents might get mad. Having one quote with a curse in it doesn’t encourage people to add more because it’s an actual thing Jack Black said, no sane person would think “oh hey, there’s a quote with a curse word, I should go out of my way to look up other times these people have cursed.” Realshow19 (talk) 18:49, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We do not have to dumb it down. We can be smart about putting out content (like the Story Mode:Formidi-Bomb example). Including swears are extremely unnecessary and is not needed to convey Jack Black's point of saying that Minecraft is fun.
I'm not saying we should only target children, we should target everybody.
The wiki will always be an archive and source of information, but I disagree with the idea of cursing adds much value and benefit to the history of the franchise. Ayaan 18:55, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The key thing here is that this is a quote. I didn’t write Jack Black cursing, I transcribed it. By all means don’t casually insert swears into sentences, but if someone of importance is quoted saying a curse, so what? We can’t just change what he said, that defeats the point. The wiki simply isn’t aimed at children, if this was a serious concern it would already be part of the rules. Quite the opposite, our style is largely based off Wikipedia’s and they explicitly encourage people not to censor. Realshow19 (talk) 19:01, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose per previous. I may not be particularly keen on swear words, but a quote is a quote and it should be presented as said and/or written, verbatim, no redactions (for the keen-eyed among you, yes, I intentionally said the same thing thrice). We're not a helicopter parent. DarkShadowTNT (talk) 18:53, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oppose censoring quotes. We are not subject to age ratings, and if overprotective parents are concerned their little kids might read a swearword on the internet... well, it's not our business. I'd rather just avoid having a quote if it's not really necessary.--Capopanzo (talk | contribs) 19:38, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

 Oppose - I hate swear words, but I hate censorship more.Drour1234 (talk) 19:48, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pretty clear consensus against censoring this quote.--Arina (she/her) 18:56, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
