Actor

Steve is one of the main protagonists who appears in A Minecraft Movie, modeled after the eponymous player character. Portrayed by Jack Black, Steve was originally born on Earth, eventually becoming the first human to step foot into the Overworld, spending the rest of his life there amongst the villagers.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Steve dons a blue shirt that is carried over from his video game counterpart, albeit fully covering his neck whereas it is visible on his voxel model in the game.

Steve has a much larger beard compared to his counterpart's shorter goatee beard. In scenes of Steve first entering the mine and discovering the Overworld, his beard is completely brown. In later scenes, however, the beard has grayed with only his mustache and some parts remaining brown.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Having lived in the Overworld for many years, Steve is very experienced with its properties and lore. He functions as an almost mentor figure to those around him, reciting lessons and techniques learned across his adventures, such as how to use a crafting table. However, he is also a rather jolly figure, cracking jokes and excitedly shouting to enhance his statements.

His passion can turn into determination, and in turn bring him into danger. When young, he was obsessed with becoming a miner and exploring the underground, leading him to acquire dangerous equipment and trying to sneak into an off limits area.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Steve's building powers

Due to a lifelong hyperfixation, Steve is incredibly gifted at mining and wielding a pickaxe. Upon entering the Overworld, this took on a greater nuance, making him incredibly adept at placing blocks. Very quickly, he proved to be skilled, creative, and ambitious, building structures larger than those typical of the realm. In at least one scenario, he managed to erect several large figureheads of villagers within an incredibly fast speed with no signs of fatigue, and claimed to have "moved mountains with [his] mind".[1]

As he grew and mastered his skills, Steve has become an expert on survival, displaying many feats. While battling a zombie, he proved very resourceful, weaponizing one of its own arms against it. As daybreak set in, he appeared immune to the flames of the burning zombie, emerging triumphant. He has also shown near superhuman reflexes, managing to pour a water bucket while falling out of the sky, seemingly materializing the bucket out of nowhere.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Steve, as a child, onlooking the abandoned mine he yearns to enter

As a child, Steve lived on Earth and once attempted to enter "an abandoned mine just outside town"[2] because he yearned to explore the underground. However, he was prevented from entering by an old miner that guarded[2] the entrance. As an adult thirty[2] years later, Steve was forced to grow up, taking up a dead end job as a doorknob salesman. The experience proved very demoralizing, until he was inspired by the shape of his lunch to ditch his career and return to his childhood dream of entering the abandoned mine. After quitting, he finally entered the mines and began trying to harvest materials, accidentally discovering the Overworld.

In the Overworld, Steve met and tamed a wolf that he names Dennis. He eventually becomes an expert in the unique functions of the Overworld and lived in a village alongside its villagers, making several useful redstone contraptions such as Steve's Lava Chicken!, a theme park, as well as an advanced underground mineshaft. At one point, he encountered a creature known as the Ender Dragon.[1] At another point, Steve found a ruined portal and discovered the Nether, giving way to Malgosha aiming to destroy the Overworld.

Many years later, he meets Henry, Dawn, Natalie, and Garrett when they enter the Overworld, helping them understand their surroundings. He ultimately ends up recruiting the gang[3] to help him defend the Overworld against the piglins. Along the way, Steve aids him and the misfits by continuing to provide them with gear and tools that were built by him or are native to the Overworld.

During the final battle against the piglins, Steve dons his full set of diamond armour and faces Malgosha. When the Nether portal is destroyed and the effect it had on the Overworld is undone, Steve gains the upper hand on Malgosha as she begins zombifying. He is able to effortlessly dodge all of her final attacks, due to her weakness, and leaves her to die.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Earth[edit | edit source]

Growing up, Steve claimed to have felt very restricted by those around him. He was denied his dream of entering the mines until he became an adult, and his creativity was stifled by unspecified people. As a result, he felt little grief about being trapped in the Overworld, and in fact seemed thrilled to be on his own.[1] However, he felt little resentment towards the people of the world, hoping to inspire them like his adventures did to him. As a result, he eventually relented and decided to return, helping create a hit video game along the way.

Garrett Garrison[edit | edit source]

Steve beside Garrett in a tense situation

Steve and Garrett possess an immediate bond, doing a handshake upon meeting and making a deal. Over the course of the film, they embark on many adventures together, such as flying together with elytra and working together in a fighting ring. Steve is also shown calling Garret "Gar-Gar" as a nickname. Although they are shown to get along, Steve is also more wise and knowledgeable than his friend, not afraid to make fun of his fumbles. Upon preparing to leave, Garrett expressed great sadness, and specifically referred to Steve as his brother, showing a deep bond between the two. When Steve decides to return to Chuglass with the misfits at the end of the film, he commonly spends time with Garrett and performs a song with him at Game Over World.

Malgosha[edit | edit source]

As soon as the two come into contact, Steve and Malgosha possess a contentious relationship. Shocked by his roundness, Malgosha's first reaction to seeing Steve was confusion, quickly replaced by greed as she learns of him possessing the Orb of Dominance. As Steve ends up getting captured by her forces, he quickly proves quite antithetical to her beliefs, having apparently befriended fellow prisoners who willingly posed for him to sculpt. After killing them, Malgosha attempts to barter with Steve, tricking him into thinking she has Dennis captured if not killed so he can try and claim the Earth Cube for him.

In spite of Steve agreeing to her offer, he immediately quells any chance of actually helping her, at most hiding certain details from the misfits as he meets them. As the piglins arrive to rendezvous with Steve, the deal is effectively off, the meeting turning into a full-scale invasion. By the time the conflict ends, Steve contemplates showing mercy for Malgosha as she slowly suffocates to death, only to be met with repeated attempts to stab him with a knife. The last time Steve sees Malgosha, he knows not to trust or even humor her, as her mind fades from zombification.
