Looting is an enchantment for swords that can cause mobs to drop more items and increases the chances of rare drops. The additional drops do not affect experience.
Obtaining[edit | edit source]
Looting can be obtained from enchantment tables, drops from mobs that have spawned in a raid,[Bedrock Edition only] books obtained by fishing, monster room chests, librarian villagers, and non-village structure loot.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Looting increases the maximum number of items for most common drops by 1 per level. Looting also increases the chance of rare drops and equipment drops by 1 percentage point per level.
Looting affects any kill that happens while holding the enchanted item in the main hand, not just any kill by the enchanted item.[1] For example, a player can fire a projectile then switch to the enchanted item before the projectile reaches the target to get the Looting effect, or can fire a projectile from the off-hand[Java Edition only] while holding the enchanted item in the main hand. This allows Looting to work on arrows or thrown tridents, as long as the player is holding the Looting item when the arrow or trident lands.
Looting applies to mobs killed with a sweep attack.[Java Edition only]
Using commands to get higher levels than III works as expected, adding higher numbers with a weight of 1. A mob always drops its naturally-spawned equipment at Looting level 92.
Looting has no effect in certain cases:
- Kills by tamed wolves are not affected by this enchantment, even if the target is struck first.
- Mobs with no drops, such as bats, bees, or endermites, are not affected by this enchantment.
- Withers, iron golems[2], cats[2] and snow golems are not affected by this enchantment.
- Looting does not increase the amount of fish dropped by fish mobs.[3]
- Guardians and elder guardians are not considered fish mobs, and Looting does cause them to drop more fish.
- In Java Edition, Looting does not increase the drop of bamboo from pandas.[4]
- Looting does not increase the drop quantity when used on a fox, but it does increase the chance for a drop.
- It does not affect the amount of wool dropped by sheep.
- It does not affect sponges or tide armor trims dropped by elder guardians.
- It does not affect totems of undying dropped by evokers.
- It does not affect the amount of skulls dropped by wither skeletons, but does increase the chance for them to drop one.
- It does not affect the amount of sculk catalysts dropped by wardens.
