Spawning

Natural generation

A camel sitting in a desert village.

Camels spawn in desert villages. Only one camel will spawn per village, and it will always appear by the village center.

Drops

Upon death, camels drop:

  • 1–3XP when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
  • a saddle if the camel was already equipped with one.

Upon successful breeding, 1–7XP is dropped.

Killing a baby camel yields neither items nor experience.

Behavior

Camels wander aimlessly avoiding hazards and obstacles, and they can sit for two to seven seconds, before eventually getting up. They will get up and flee after taking damage. Camels have the unique ability to automatically "jump" up 1.5 block-high walls without actually jumping. Compare this to a horse, which can only automatically "jump" up 1 block without using the jump function. This allows camels to step onto fences and walls, among other things.

Riding

Camels can be ridden by placing a saddle on it. The saddle can be placed on the camel by holding it and then use it on the camel, or by accessing its inventory. A camel's inventory can be accessed by riding it and opening the player's inventory or by sneaking and then pressing the "open inventory" button, just like a horse. Camels only have one slot in their inventory, to put the SlotSprite Saddle.png: Sprite image for Saddle in Minecraft saddle on it.

Up to two players can ride one camel. Camels can walk slowly and sprint somewhat faster. Camels can do a "dash"; it will launch several blocks forward. The dash has a 2.75 second cooldown before it can be used again and can reach a distance of 12 blocks.[verify] This dash also gives the camel some height, up to maximum of just under two blocks. Camels are tall enough that some hostile mobs can't reach players to attack them. While riding, the player in the back seat can't hurt the player driving, and can't hurt the camel either.

Breeding

Camels will follow the player if they have a cactus in their hand, but will stop following the player if they are separated from the player by at least six blocks. Sitting camels will not follow the player. Adult camels enter love mode and breed to create baby camels after they are each given a cactus. Camels have a cooldown of five minutes before they can breed again.

Healing

Camels are healed by 2HP♥ health points each time they are fed a cactus. Camels also heal on their own over time.
