Specifically after hydrating it they will detect the player closest to it and "imprint" on the player, specifically following that player and occasionally taking breaks to randomly investigate their surroundings. This is essentially the way to "tame" a ghastling.
A ghast eventually matures into a [[Happy Ghast]], where it becomes ridable with a certain recipe. The maturing process can be sped up with snowballs.
