Welcome to the mid-year recap for 2024, where you'll get a run down of all the most important wiki happenings that occurred between January 1 and June 30, 2024. Recaps are a new thing that will happen once in July and once in January, to recap everything that happened in the last six months. These recaps are written for other editors, not readers, though there's nothing stopping a reader from having a look. You can see the discussion that resulted in their existence here.

Minecraft updates on the wiki Edit

Tricky Trials and Armored Paws released recently, and their content has documented pretty perfectly! We had a good chunk of new editors appearing to help us remove 1.21 upcoming notices which was great to see. All new content had great quality pages up after just a day or two as well. And despite being absolutely gargantuan in terms of features, it didn't take long at all for all of 24w14potato's content to be extensively documented. Great job team!

All the hard work on Tricky Trials content has paid off, as our Java Edition 1.21, Bedrock Edition 1.21.0, and Tricky Trials articles have been consistently appearing in first place for Google search results! As you can expect, this resulted in our pageview count skyrocketing. And that, paired with our new Indie Wiki Buddy pseudo-advertisement, has meant things are looking hopeful in our fight against Fandom. Well done Minecraft Wiki!

Wiki updates and news Edit

MediaWiki 1.41 and extensions Edit

The wiki has been updated to MediaWiki 1.41, and alongside that upgrade we introduced the DiscussionTools, TemplateWizard, and AdvancedSearch extensions. These should all prove useful for users. Specifically, the reply function of DiscussionTools has proved to be invaluable, since it makes replying to comments drastically simpler.

Marketplace content Edit

The wiki now allows individual pages for official Minecraft Marketplace/DLC content. This is a rather large increase in scope for the wiki, and involves needing to create hundreds of pages for skin packs, maps, texture packs, and similar content, but we'll talk about how progress on those pages is going in the Projects section. And to make it clear, only officially licensed Marketplace content can be documented, you can see what we determine as official here.

15th anniversary Edit

On June 17, the Minecraft Wiki turned 15 years old! An anniversary to be celebrated no doubt, which we did by changing our logo to an anniversary variation of the original Minepedia logo and by releasing the 15 Years of Minecraft Wiki page.

Themes Edit

The Nether and Hydra theme have been introduced! The Nether theme is self explanatory, but the Hydra theme is based on the appearance the wiki had way back during the early Gamepedia days. It's quite the nostalgia hit. The Nether theme was created by Oakar567, while the Hydra theme was a joint effort by Corelakes, Dr03ramos, Faariaz, and LucasGameszYT. You can use enable one of them by heading to your Preferences, then Gadgets, and you'll find them under "Theme gadgets".

User promotions Edit

Aside from granting autopatrol and director rights, there's been just two promotions so far this year. Dianliang233 has become a patroller, and Harristic has become an administrator.

Other Edit

The wiki has seen a ton of important changes in these last six months, let's list a couple of them

  • We renamed all Bedrock beta articles to use "Preview" instead (those that had preview equivalents at least)
  • We shortened spin off namespaces from "Minecraft [Name]" to just "[Name]"
  • A "Navigation" section was added to all pages, a new home for navboxes
  • Navbox and infobox templates got a new naming system, for example, "Item" is now "Infobox item", and "Entities" is now "Navbox entities"

Projects Edit

Let's highlight some active projects:

Interactive tools and calculators
The geniuses over at interactive tools and calculators (spearheaded by Dianliang233) whipped up the mace damage calculator! A really useful tool that, to my knowledge, isn't available anywhere else. Having this is a big win for the wiki! They're also working on an incredible interactive block/structure renderer that you should get excited for.
Project DLC
Started up as a result of the decision to allow pages on official Minecraft Marketplace/DLC content, Project DLC has seen a lot of activity, which is great to see since there's so much work to be done. They've got 35 pages already up and looking good, with many more on the way. If you want to help out, put yourself down as a contributor and work on some drafts.
Recipe usage rewrite
BabylonAS has started up the recipe usage rewrite project with the aim of getting the infamously messy crafting, crafting usage, and recipe list modules rewritten into a much better shape. If you've got the technical expertise for it, go help out!

Fun stats Edit

  • Unsurprisingly, the day with the most edits was April 1, with 1351 edits. Of course, this was because of the release of 24w14potato. April 1 was also the day with the most unique contributors, with 193 of them.
  • The day with the most new files was January 29, as NineTreyBlud got around to uploading more sound files from Minecraft Legends.
  • The day with the most new pages was May 5, as StizzurpXDD created a lot of redirects.
