Development on the film began in February 2014 when creator [[Markus Persson]] announced that the film was in development at Warner Bros. Pictures. However, the film ultimately did not leave the pre-production phase until April 2022, when it was reported that {{w|Jared Hess}} was set to direct the film and [[Jason Momoa]] was attached to star. Further casting was announced between May 2023 and January 2024, with {{w|Principal photography|principal photography}} beginning that month and wrapping in April 2024.
